Unpicking

So ideas were in short supply and the scarf was unpicked, but the conversation was not and was very stimulating, and N I'm sure some B**ing did take place, but naturally only in the most friendly way. And yes Celebrity did come up.

I've learnt that if someone sends you an angry email you should acknowledge their anger before trying to deflate the situation - one to remember as N was feeling annoyed that no one seemed to believe she was angry.

Started a green scarf - picture to follow when I've progressed a bit further, but I have a dilemma, I only have one ball of yarn (bought in the states), so I don't know if I'm going to have enough to finish it, I guess a trip to John Lewis to find a colour to match it with might be needed, although it's such a lovely green, I think i'd rather just have a very short scarf.

The evening ended standing outside looking at a jumping Saturn through some Binoculars.

B.C.

Now stands for Before Celebrity - taken from Ali Smith, whose book The Accidental I've just started reading. T will be pleased, she gave it to me as a present some time ago and has been patiently waiting to borrow it back ever since.

Missed yoga... not good, I am becoming a lost cause there.

Am off now to do some knitting... at a Stitch and Bitch or a Knitting Circle (a generational thing). I was hoping someone would be able to teach me how to do cable stitch, but I didn't get it together to buy the special needle you need. I'll take the scarf I haven't touched for a while, in the hope that someone there can save me from unpicking it and turn it into something beautiful, although I think that it might also be a lost cause.

Meta-celebrity

The great British public has voted Chantelle (a non-celebrity) the winner of Celebrity Big Brother. What does this mean - a kick up the teeth to the idea of celebrity? Are we saying that now we are all celebrities or we think we are, or deserve to be? Or a 'we are just fed up' with all the so called celebrity we have to put up with, from the broadsheets to 'celebrity magazines'. Or simply that British thing of supporting the underdog, I'll go with the latter, she survived all those ego's, that's pretty good going.

Soft focus

I am watching the strangest film on Five (well it's on in the background)... Ladies Room (1999) a strange mixture of women in purgatory (a white room), with flashbacks. The cast includes Lorraine Bracco the shrink from the Sopranos, John Malkovich, Greta Scacchi and Molly Parker. Strange ethereal music and soft focus, very 1980's time warp? And all because I can't find the control for the digi box.

The colour of choice has gone back to black, but I'm not sure it might have already lost its newfound coolness.

Some London news

Call centre workers for Westminster Council (central London) are being asked to move to a small town (pop 5,000) in Scotland. I'm sure its a lovely place, but according the the BBC these workers are dealing with parking, licensing, community protection and library services - what would they be doing in Scotland or anywhere, but central London? Unsurprisingly there are no takers yet.

On shiny things

Later on I went to a talk on "Why anything can be any thing" which just happened to be about why we are attracted to shiny objects… I'm not sure I understood it all, but the theory put forward was that it's an evolutionary thing, that goes back to our survival instincts… so that explains why all those shiny products are so hard to resist.

Hugs photo

© 2003 South Asia Tribune Publications

Just in case you are wondering, I'm not trying to compare our little dispute to the relationship between India and Pakistan... I googled hugs and this was the only adults hugging I could find... Does this say something about our culture or just a lack of photos on Google? A good photo though.

Hugs

Our neighbor 'thing' has surfaced again... it's interesting when people say they aren't into arguing and then get someone else to do it for them. It's not quite the same, but reminds me of when I worked at this company and the boss got a bunch of us together before the start of a big project and warned us that we might be the focus of some people's stress, in hindsight what she should have said, was that we would be the focus of her stress.... picture screaming woman...

Frolicking foxes

We just had a bit of excitement in the garden. Two foxes, lots of squawking and Sandy going mad wanting them off her turf. They weren't the usual mangy types, but the well-groomed variety and about the same size as her, so I wasn't sure I should let her out – you know two against one. I tried knocking, or more like banging on the window, but they didn't seem to mind.

How warm is your room?

Thoughtfully Ken has sent us a thermometer to tell us if the house is warmer enough. For those of you who don't believe me when I say it's cold here, we left it in the hall and it went into the Danger! zone which apparently means there is a risk of hypothermia, heart attack or stroke if we hang out in the hallway. It then tells you what you should do - turn up the heating and put on more clothes, very helpful indeed.

Criminals as victims

The last day at the conference was great, although my ability to concentrate had dropped.

Interesting talk on how we have looked at other groups that were persecuted during the holocaust including criminals, which is apparently a group that has really been ignored. Even though many were not what we would class as genuine criminals, we seem to have had a problem thinking of them at victims - can victims only be those that are seen as morally upstanding?

And

Also, BL talking about Belsize Square Synagogue, which was started by refugees, we had a nice chat and I asked her if she would give a talk at the WL.

Good to catch up with some friends I haven't seen in a while. And to see people from the last conference three years ago - time collapsing in on itself.

Academia

Have spent the day amongst academia. Met some very interesting people. Lots on DPs (displaced persons), discovered that there's not that much research that's been done yet. So there was me thinking, help I can't find the info I need and it doesn't exist.

Got to talking about Etty Hillesum, who was this amazing young Jewish woman, who wrote a diary about her experiences of being a refugee in Holland in the early 1940's. The older version of Anne Frank, she was also murdered in the camps. In the diary she's trying to deal with all the everyday issues of being a young single woman, from work to relationships, hormones and periods, as well as trying to find a way of making sense of what is happening in Europe, to herself, her friends and family.

Rabbits

The other day when I was going through an Ebay thing... I caught myself seriously thinking about bidding for a hoody with real rabbit fur... I thought, well that should be warm. Then I had to pull myself back and say hello RABBIT FUR, however cold London gets, it doesn't get cold enough to justify buying real fur - unless perhaps its second hand, but then I'm not sure I could even deal with that. I remember my grandmother had one of those fox stole's with all the bits - you know the head and feet et al - not nice. From a different age and it should really stay there.

Well, HAPPY everything to everyone

I woke up this morning to a new year's cold, not surprising as I spent quite a lot of the week with kids and adults all cold ridden, plus the fact that I've been driving around in a freezing cold car after it tried to poison me with anti-freeze – yuk, believe me it doesn't smell good, it could even be an alternative to glue sniffing – although I guess that's one for Andrew.

Being Jewish, we had two Christmas days?!? – which included two Christmas lunches... One cooked by David and Silvia and one by my mum with a hand from one and all. Way too much food – I think on day two we had four deserts which was just silly, but very tasty except for pudding which I can't stand. Needless to say the 'Gluten free' went out the window.

I had a moment at the end of day two when it all got a bit much and felt sad thinking about all the people not with us – especially my Dad - hard.

Usually the week between Xmas and New Year is quite low key – meaning vegging out in front of the TV, but this year I've managed a walk on the Heath followed by hot chocolate and cake at Café Mozart, skating at Kew, a trip to the sales, session two of a therapy experiment I'm doing (more later), and a New Years Eve party at Irene's – all in all a lovely week – and cold permitting, there's still a trip to Tate Modern to come.

Back to Mary Poppins - don't you love all that technicolor. Roll on 2006.
